"Which lettering brush is a good one to start with?" This is a common question we get, so here it is!
The Letter Art SWSM series size 8 Synthetic Sable Sign Pencil is the same brush as the more expensive SWKM series size 8 Kolinsky Sable, but with Synthetic Sable hair and only one third of the price.
The Medium Length Size 8 is the ideal size brush for the Beginner Signwriter to start with as it's larger size provides a well defined chisel tip that is the ideal width to write a 3" letter height giving a 1/2" wide stroke. With the Medium Length hair being easier to control than the longer hairs of the SWSL & SWKL series, this brush is the ideal spec for beginners to start with, while still being long enough to be effective on most professional sign lettering jobs. A great all round brush.
The significant price difference between the SWSM size 8 and its SWKM series Kolinsky Sable counterpart does not reflect in the brush's performance though. The feel and performance of the high quality Synthetic Sable is very similar to that of Natural Sable with the only real difference to note being that the natural sable holds a bit more paint, making the SWSM series a professional level brush that's ideal for beginners on a budget as well as the most discerning experienced Pros.
